Transforming the Subconscious Into Art

Jaeyoung Kim’s art stems from deeply personal experiences and introspective exploration. Memories, emotions, and the intangible fragments of his subconscious mind become the foundation for his creative process. These elements are not simply recorded; they undergo a transformative process, emerging as a distinct artistic language that connects universally.

Using free association techniques, Kim allows subconscious thoughts to flow freely into his work. This approach mirrors psychological therapy, where individuals explore their inner world without restriction. For Kim, this process is both a method of emotional expression and a way to engage viewers in their own introspective journeys.

Aphantasia: Turning Limitation Into Innovation

A unique aspect of Kim’s creative journey is his experience with aphantasia, a condition that prevents him from visualizing mental images. Rather than seeing this as a limitation, Kim embraces it as a driving force for innovation. His acute sensitivity to color and form allows him to reconstruct emotions and memories in abstract ways, creating works that transcend literal representation.

One notable example is his piece FA-5 (Undine), inspired by the motion of waves and fish. Instead of depicting these directly, Kim translates their sensory essence into abstract symbols. Subtle shifts in color and form invite viewers to interpret the work through their own subconscious lens, fostering a deeply personal connection with his art.

Symbolism and Depth in Subconscious Inspired Abstract Art

Kim’s art is characterized by its semiotic structure, where abstract forms act as symbolic representations of subconscious thoughts. His series, “Representations of the Unconscious”, exemplifies this approach, blending abstract forms with emotional and philosophical depth.

Drawing inspiration from philosophical ideas like those in Plato’s Symposium and the emotional abstraction of Mark Rothko, Kim constructs a symbolic language that transcends traditional artistic boundaries. His work invites viewers to explore the sublime nature of human emotion and memory, creating a profound connection between the personal and the universal.

Philosophy Behind Subconscious Inspired Abstract Art

For Kim, art is more than a visual medium; it is a tool for introspection and communication. He believes that art should not merely be seen but felt, providing a space for both the artist and the viewer to connect on a deeper level.

By transforming the subconscious into visual language, Kim’s work challenges conventional notions of art. His creations encourage viewers to reflect on their own memories and emotions, offering an experience that is as much about self-discovery as it is about aesthetic appreciation.
