Kwon Yeju’s Blue Memories: Warm Messages of Connection Through Trees

Kwon Yeju is an artist who creates her works centered around the theme of ‘memory’ while immersed in the warm nature of Jeju Island. Using oil pastels and oil paints, she delicately captures the landscapes and changes in light, creating a dreamlike atmosphere that transcends reality and dreams.

The forests, trees, and seas in her artworks are not mere landscapes but symbols of ancient memories viewed from nature’s perspective. Through these mediums of memory, she aims to offer warm comfort and a sense of connection to her audience.

Kwon Yeju particularly strives to convey the message that “no one is alone” through her paintings. This message is deeply embedded in her works, inspired by the beautiful natural scenery and everyday moments of Jeju.

A Journey of Emotions Painted in Blue

Blue plays a crucial role in Kwon Yeju’s artworks. She sees blue as a color that is both melancholic and hopeful, resembling the complex emotions of humans. While it may feel cold at first, this color ultimately conveys warmth and is used as a tool to explore the deep inner workings of memory. Her paintings combine rough, spontaneous brush strokes with detailed expressions, capturing both intense and delicate sensibilities. Blue, in particular, helps find hope in loneliness and lightens the burden of worries and pain in one’s heart.

Working in the warm nature of Jeju Island, the influence of blue in her works goes beyond mere color, adding depth to emotions. Through blue, she aims to convey a sense of solidarity and comfort, inspired by Jeju’s nature. The blue light of Jeju’s sea, sky, and forests transmits a warm energy in the artist’s works, allowing viewers to feel that they are not alone.

Tree’s Memory: A Symbol of Time and Connection

A notable theme in Kwon Yeju’s recent works is ‘the memory of trees’. Trees that have lived for a long time symbolize the connection between humans, nature, and time. These trees remember ancient life forms and all the seasons of the Earth, conveying the message that we are connected to all life, transcending time and space.

In her artworks, trees appear not as objects of nature, but as subjects of memory. This creates a dreamlike feeling that moves between reality and dreams, conveying a faint sense of connection to those who encounter the works. Through these tree memories, the artist speaks about how we are all interconnected, offering warm comfort even in loneliness. This allows those who appreciate the works to feel that they are not alone.
