In everyday life, we often encounter a person’s appearance before we come to know their thoughts, character, or emotional reality. Clothing, taste, possessions, gestures, and attitude can quickly become the language through which others read us.

Yet Yun does not approach this condition simply as vanity or superficial judgment. Instead, she looks at image-making as a natural response to social life. An image can offer confidence, distance, protection, or control. Her work begins in the subtle gap between how a person appears and what they quietly carry within.

Luxury Bag and Tiger, 2025, Oil on canvas, 91 x 91 cm

Luxury as a form of protection

In Hyeshin Yun’s work, luxury goods are not presented merely as symbols of consumption. They become protective devices, almost like armor worn before facing the world. People may choose certain images in order to appear stronger, more successful, more composed, or less vulnerable.

Luxury occupies the most visible surface of that choice. Its polished and refined appearance attracts attention, but it also creates a barrier. In Yun’s paintings, luxury is not just decoration. It becomes a social armor, shaped by the expectations, desires, and pressures that surround contemporary life.

Luxury Necklace and Dalmatian, 2026, Oil on canvas, 72.7 x 53 cm

The animal as an inner self

If luxury points outward, the animals in Yun’s work turn inward. Through animal symbolism, the artist gives form to different aspects of human emotion and identity. The tiger suggests strength, instinct, power, and the desire for success. The rabbit evokes a purer self, closer to what remains before social performance. The dog carries warmth, friendliness, empathy, and the ability to build relationships.

These animals are not simply cute or decorative figures. They reflect the many selves people hold within them. The desire to be strong, the wish to remain sincere, and the need to connect gently with others all appear through these animal forms. By pairing them with luxury imagery, Yun visualizes psychological layers that are often difficult to express directly.

Luxury Bag and Tiger, 2024, Oil on canvas, 72.7 x 53 cm

What remains beyond social armor

The most compelling moments in Hyeshin Yun’s work emerge when luxury and animals appear together. The refined image of material desire meets the instinctive presence of living beings, creating a quiet tension on the canvas. What first appears polished and glamorous begins to reveal softness, instability, and human vulnerability.

We all protect ourselves in different ways. We may want to seem strong, calm, successful, or untouched by pain. Yun’s work does not condemn that impulse. Instead, it asks why such images become necessary in the first place. Standing before her work, viewers are invited to consider not only the image they present to others, but also the emotions that remain carefully guarded beneath it.

If you’d like to see more works by Hyeshin Yun:
🌐 Visit the artist’s website
📸 See more on Instagram

Yumi Jang: Behind the Curtain, A Space of One’s Own

How much can an image really tell us?
