They do not gather toward a single destination. They exist within the same current, yet each one follows its own direction.

The fish-like forms in Xiu Kwon’s work do not point to specific individuals. They feel closer to a state of being—an image of existence in continuous motion. We share the same time and space, but we do not move through life with the same emotions or speed. Through these drifting forms, Xiu Kwon shows how separate lives can quietly coexist within a single field.

Why Do Dreams Disappear as We Get Closer?

The water droplets that often appear in Xiu Kwon’s paintings evoke dreams, goals, and ideals. From a distance, they seem clear and beautiful. Yet the closer we move toward them, the harder they become to hold.

In this sense, the droplet is not only a symbol of hope. It also carries the fragility of what cannot last. A dream may shine brightly while it remains out of reach, but it changes the moment we approach it. Xiu Kwon observes both the radiance and the fleeting nature of dreams, allowing the act of drifting to feel less like arrival and more like process.

When Vanishing Moments Stay With Us

Xiu Kwon’s work also includes images that hold emotional traces, such as sunsets, night scenes, and heart-like forms. A fading sky leaves a deep impression precisely because it lasts only a short while. The fact that it cannot remain makes it feel even more beautiful.

The drifting forms in her paintings sometimes gather into shapes that suggest love and relationships. Yet these forms are never fixed. Figures that seem to be together slowly move in different directions, and what once appeared as one shared emotion begins to scatter over time. Xiu Kwon quietly holds that subtle distance—the space between closeness, memory, and disappearance.

Motion That Continues Through the Waves

The backgrounds in Xiu Kwon’s paintings are not simple fields of color. Some feel calm, like a gentle current. Others seem charged with unsettled emotion. In works filled with dense red textures, the surface suggests anxiety, tension, and inner turbulence.

Still, the beings within these spaces do not stop. They continue to move through unstable currents, each following its own direction. Through this movement, Xiu Kwon speaks about the persistence of life. Her paintings may appear to rise or sink, to arrive or disappear. What matters is not the final destination, but the traces left throughout the journey.

Standing before Xiu Kwon’s work, we may find ourselves asking:
Where am I drifting now?
And what shape do the traces of my dreams take beside me?

To see more works by Xiu Kwon:
🌐 Visit the artist’s website
📸 See more works on Instagram

Youngmin Suh: Weaving Invisible Emotions into Emocells

Moving in Different Directions on the Same Current In Xiu Kwon’s paintings, small beings move slowly through water-like spaces.
