Just as sunlight becomes more distinct when it filters through the shade of trees, Youn sees brightness and darkness as inseparable parts of lived experience.

This relationship appears most clearly in her use of yellow and blue. Yellow suggests hope and warmth, while blue evokes shadow, inwardness, and more somber emotions. Rather than assigning each color a fixed meaning, Youn allows them to remain in tension, creating a visual field where joy and sorrow can coexist.

Loose, gestural brushwork and heightened shifts in color temperature make light seem to ripple across the surface, transforming observed landscapes into scenes shaped by both perception and emotion.

Cycle of Light, 2025–2026, Oil on canvas, 162.2 × 130.3 cm each / 162.2 × 260.6 cm overall

Blue Hour and the Transience of Light

The blue hour—the interval around dawn and dusk when the atmosphere takes on a cool blue cast—is an important visual source for Youn. At these times, city lights emerge against the changing sky, sharpening the contrast between warm and cool tones.

Her attention also extends to ordinary, fleeting details: sunlight passing through trees, reflections scattered across the ground, wild grasses, and small unnamed flowers. Their emotional presence is carried as much by the surrounding light, color, trees, water, and architecture as by the figures themselves.

For Youn, the landscape is not simply a backdrop but a way of extending an internal state outward. These fragments form the emotional foundation of her paintings.

Her work is not an uncomplicated celebration of brightness.
