“Night and Streetlight”
In the heart of a city shrouded in darkness, a lone streetlight casts its gentle glow, illuminating not just the streets, but the profound depths of the human soul. The night, with its quiet stillness, became a canvas for his thoughts and emotions. “Night is a special time for me,” Kim explains. “The darkness grants me the time to focus entirely on self-reflection. By documenting this mental clarity through my paintings, I find moments of healing and release.” Through his art, he captures the delicate interplay of ink and blank space, mirroring the ever-changing tapestry of our lives beneath the vast night sky.

The Art of Ink Wash Painting
Kim Yeon Do primarily works with traditional ink wash painting, a technique known for its expressive use of black ink on paper or cotton. His preferred mediums are traditional Korean paper (Jangji) or cotton, which allow him to explore the subtle nuances of ink and wash. The simplicity and fluidity of ink wash painting enable him to convey deep emotions and complex themes with minimalistic elegance. “The interplay of ink and void on hanji or cotton reflects the constant flow and change of our lives under the night sky,” Kim says. “By expressing the cycle of ink and void as darkness and light, I seek to explore the natural laws of yin and yang, delving deep into human existence and life’s essence.”

The Power of Art: Healing and Self-Discovery

Beneath the softly glowing streetlight, we can all confront our thoughts, feelings, hopes, and dreams,” he reflects.
His art serves as both a comfort and a catalyst for deeper self-understanding. “I wish for my work to provide comfort to some and an opportunity for deeper self-understanding for others,” Kim shares. The serenity of the night and the gentle glow of the streetlight provide a space for viewers to pause, reflect, and heal.

Kim’s creative process is deeply intertwined with his personal experiences. “I began painting nightscapes and streetlights during moments of profound loneliness and vulnerability. The night became a refuge from a relentless world, and the brilliant glow of the streetlight provided solace, allowing me to engage in meaningful dialogue with my innermost being,” he recounts.

The result is a body of work that resonates deeply with viewers, offering them a glimpse into their own inner worlds. “Through my ‘Night and Streetlight’ series, I hope to offer viewers a chance to explore their inner selves,” he says. “Beneath the softly glowing streetlight, we can all confront our thoughts, feelings, hopes, and dreams.”
