Discovering Watercolor: A Passion Ignited

Simon’s artistic path began at Sutton College, where he immersed himself in various creative disciplines before finding his niche in watercolor and mixed media. The fluidity and unpredictability of watercolor instantly resonated with him, offering a dynamic way to convey atmosphere, light, and emotion.

However, it was during the lockdown that his journey truly deepened. As a carer navigating difficult circumstances, Simon turned to painting as a daily escape. This period of intense practice and self-discovery led him to enroll in online courses and in-person classes, further refining his watercolor techniques.

Watercolor as a Community Connection

Art is not only a solitary endeavor—it thrives in community. Recognizing this, Simon joined the Carshalton and Wallington Art Group in 2021, becoming an active committee member. By 2022, he became a part of Carshalton Artists, where his depictions of Carshalton’s landscapes and architecture quickly gained recognition.

Through his participation in these groups, Simon has:

  • Expanded his artistic reach and gained new perspectives.
  • Built meaningful connections with fellow artists.
  • Contributed to the local art scene by showcasing his distinctive watercolor techniques.

His artwork often captures the charm of historic buildings, serene park views, and everyday moments, bringing a fresh perspective to familiar scenes through the delicate transparency and vibrancy of watercolor.

Neurodiversity: A Personal Mission

In 2024, Simon received an ADHD diagnosis, which reshaped the way he viewed his artistic journey. This revelation validated his creative energy and inspired him to use watercolor as a tool for awareness and advocacy. Through his art, Simon highlights the unique perspectives of neurodiverse individuals, showcasing how creativity can be both an expression and an outlet for personal experiences.

His latest project, “Head in the Clouds”, is a testament to this mission. More than just a collection of paintings, this body of work represents:

The intersection of neurodiversity and artistic expression.
The emotional depth that watercolor can convey.
A platform for discussing creativity through a neurodiverse lens.

By embracing the fluidity and spontaneity of watercolor, Simon beautifully illustrates the way thoughts and emotions move in unpredictable yet deeply meaningful ways—much like the experiences of those with ADHD.
