Exploring the Unknown Through Anonymous Figures

In her latest series, currently on display at The Untitled Void Gallery in Seoul, Choi delves into the complexities of relationships and the emotional turmoil they often provoke. The series is inspired by a passage from Kobo Abeโ€™s The Face of Another (1964):

“I may have glimpsed a freedom unimaginable at the time when I depended upon human relations through the window of the face… Perhaps, losing my face allowed me to truly experience the outside world rather than merely viewing a picture drawn on the window.”

Choi interprets this concept by portraying figures with featureless, black-dot faces, symbolizing the unknown and the hidden aspects of identity. These figures, often depicted in moments of solitude or interaction, embody the anxiety that comes from not fully understanding oneself or others. They represent both the artist herself and the people she encounters, making them simultaneously personal and universal.

The Emotional Landscape of Human Interaction

Choiโ€™s art speaks to the loneliness, solitude, and unease that stem from our relationships with others. The absence of facial features in her figures highlights the uncertainty and insecurity that often accompany social connections. These emotions are amplified by the muted tones and stark contrasts in her work. This creates a visual tension that mirrors the inner conflict of her subjects.

The figures in her paintings, though anonymous, take center stage in each composition. Their gestures and postures convey the emotions that their faces do not. These figures reflect the artistโ€™s inner world. They also project the personas we all create as we navigate relationships. Choiโ€™s art captures the multifaceted nature of identity. Each figure could be โ€œme,โ€ โ€œyou,โ€ or โ€œus,โ€ embodying the many faces we wear in daily life.
